David Moyes is unhappy about a previous encounter with Pellegrini

David Moyes will face off against Manuel Pellegrini this weekend when the two managers lead their sides in the Manchester derby on Sunday and Moyes is hoping to beat Pellegrini after losing to his Villareal side with Everton in 2005. The two squared off in a two legged Champions League qualifier that saw Villareal end up on top at the end of the second leg. Moyes is bitter, however, because of the fashion Everton were booted out of the competition.

Towards the end of the match that ended 1-0 in favor of Villareal, Everton’s Duncan Ferguson had a goal called back that he scored on a header, a goal which would have sent the match into extra time.

“It did rankle because we scored what we thought was a legitimate goal to take it into extra-time and it didn’t count,” Moyes said, according to¬†Sky Sports.

“Villarreal did have a really good team. They got to the semi-final of the Champions League that year so for us to run them really close gave me an idea of what a good side we were as well.”

Moyes is now in control of Manchester United after eight years at the helm of Everton and will have his chance to beat Pellegrini. Last year’s affair at the Etihad between the two Manchester sides did not end well as United defender Rio Ferdinand received a cut on his face from a missile thrown from the stands. The Greater Manchester Police, in conjunction with United and City, have stepped up their enforcement ahead of this year’s match, including graffiti patrols and dogs to sniff out those who attempt to smuggle in flairs.
