Manchester City defender Vincent Kompany is excited at the prospect of playing cross-town rivals Manchester United over the weekend, building up the match ahead of the kickoff on Sunday afternoon. City are slowly climbing their way out of an early season injury crisis and were boosted by the return of Kompany on Tuesday when the defender made his first full-game appearance since the club’s 4-0 win over Newcastle in the season opener.

“We will make sure we are in the right condition for the game,” Kompany said, according to ESPN.

“It is a special game. It is becoming one of the most sought-after fixtures in the world and it is always great to be involved in such games. I never take them for granted.”

Kompany joined fellow center backs Joleon Lescott and 20 year old Matija Nastasic, who also recently returned after suffering an ankle injury during the club’s preseason, as the three healthy central defenders available for manager Manuel Pellegrini. City defender Micah Richards has been injured since the summer and has yet to make an appearance for the club this season.

Kompany was thrilled to return to first-team action on Tuesday, revealing his delight to simply be playing for City after missing a few matches. The Belgian defender praised the club’s physio for helping him to get back so quickly and believes he will continue his great form from before he went down with the injury.

“I was probably more happy than anyone else to be on the pitch,” Kompany said, according to ESPN.

“It feels great. I am really happy to be back with the guys and I work hard every single day to make sure I can play as many games as possible. I am also very thankful to the medical staff that gave me such good attention and allowed me to come back in perfect condition. I felt in incredible form when I left the team and I have come back feeling in the same form and that is the most important.”
