Roberto Martinez praised Everton left-back Leighton Baines and stated that the player deserves more for his play from the club. The words of Martinez follow a summer-long transfer saga between Everton, Baines, and Manchester United that ended with Baines remaining with the Toffees. The speculation of a move to United has not yet fizzled, however, as it is believed that United manager David Moyes will return in January to once again try to pry the defender away from Goodison Park.

Martinez is hoping to head off the advances of United with a new contract for Baines that will include a pay rise for the English defender. The manager revealed that the club will be opening contract talks soon, saying that it’s not about the contract but the commitment.

“Leighton is the most important player for us now and in the future,” Martinez said, according to the Daily Express.

“We want to do what we can to reward that and let him know he deserves our appreciation.┬áContract talks will be opened but it is not just about the contract, it is about making sure he knows how much we want him and how much we appreciate him.”

Everton rejected three bids for Baines over the course of the summer, causing United to attempt a season-long loan capture of Real Madrid left-back Fabio Coentrao at the close of the transfer window. United missed out on Coentrao due to Real Madrid pulling back their offer at the last minute, creating the belief that David Moyes will try again to secure the services of Baines in the next transfer window.
