Arsenal boss discusses ‘top-class’ signing

Wenger hails Podolski deal

By | 30th April 2012

Many of today’s headlines have been dedicated to Arsenal completing the capture of Germany striker Lukas Podolski, who will join the Gunners next season after trying to save his current club Cologne from Bundesliga relegation.

Podolski was linked with a transfer to the North London club a few weeks ago but dismissed the speculation to focus on Cologne’s struggles.

However, after Chelsea announced the signing of Werder Bremen playmaker Marko Marin, Gunners boss Arsene Wenger wasted little time in ensuring that his club also sealed the signing of an exciting young German.

Having spoken very little about Arsenal’s pursuit of Podolski in the past, Wenger finally broke his silence to reveal just how happy he is to have the forward’s services after the summer.

“We are delighted to secure the deal for Lukas and see him as an important part of our future. He is a top-class player, a very good finisher and a proven performer at club and international level. He is a very strong player and will provide us with good attacking options,” Wenger told Arsenal’s official website.

The Frenchman added: “We are happy to have made this signing early and we are looking forward to watching Lukas contribute at the European Championship over the summer, a level where he has already made 95 caps at the age of 26. That is a phenomenal record and just shows his quality as a player.”

Podolski joins compatriot Per Mertesacker to become Arsenal’s second German signing within a span of eight months. More importantly, his arrival at the club could play a major role in convincing captain Robin van Persie about signing a long-term extension.

For now, though, Podolski is simply thrilled about the idea of joining a club that he describes as one of the best in the continent.

“I’m so happy to be joining Arsenal Football Club and to play in the Premier League. Arsenal is one of the top clubs in Europe with a huge history. There are many top quality players at Arsenal and the style of football which the team plays is fantastic.”

He continued: “I’m proud to become an Arsenal player and am looking forward to playing my first match at Emirates Stadium and doing my best for all the Arsenal fans.”

The Gunners are in pole position to finish third in the Premier League this season, which would guarantee a spot in next season’s Champions League group stage and add even more excitement for Podolski as he looks forward to a highly anticipated first stint in the English top flight.

Arsen Wenger has taken the right step in the right direction, however he should go for one more skillful, very strong/mobile striker, one more defender who can play accross the defence line ie(2,3,5)and a mobile,creative/defensive midfielder.
