Reds pay the penalty

Kenny Dalglish's men struggle while rivals lead

By | 10th September 2011

Liverpool are down 1-0 at the fortress known as Britannia Stadium, as a penalty converted by Jonathan Walters has handed Stoke City a 1-0 lead heading into half-time.

Reds vice-captain Jamie Carragher was whistled for fouling Walters and the 27-year old Potters winger made no mistake in confidently smashing his spot-kick in the upper center of the goal.

In other action, Liverpool’s major rivals are all holding slender 1-0 advantages at the interval.

Manchester City, though, could have been leading by two had it not been for a missed penalty from Carlos Tevez, who returned to the starting XI at the expense of in-form Eden Dzeko.

Six minutes after an early strike from fellow Argentine Sergio Aguero, Tevez failed to convert the spot-kick won by David Silva.

At the Stadium of Light, last season’s runners-up Chelsea wasted no chances, though, as skipper John Terry converted from a very acute angle to give his side a precious lead at a tough venue.

Similarly, Arsenal also benefited from a strike from an acute angle, albeit in this case Andrei Arshavin only had to place the ball into an open net after a blunder from Swansea goalkeeper Michel Vorm, who found himself caught away from the goal in addition to offering a poor clearance.

At Goodison Park, a Leon Osman strike has also handed Everton a 1-0 advantage over an in-form Aston Villa side while the Wolverhampton Wanderers are holding the Spurs to a goalless draw at Molineux Stadium.

Should hav spent 16 mills on adam johnson, rather than henderson. The guy is no winger! Marc albrighton will do.

Totally hopeless display, will not amount to nothing. Imagine that! At least, chelsea got a draw. My conclusion is that teams no longer fear LFC, and why should they! They are absolutely wasteful, a bunch of no hopers.
