The Most Under-Rated Special One?

By | 21st August 2009

gary-megsonGary Megson has never been a firm fan favorite at the Reebok Stadium. Often criticized for his tactical approach to the game, Trotters fans have had their fair share of moans at the man in charge. However, Megson has brought to Bolton one the most important elements of any football club: stability.

Much like his predecessor Sam Allardyce, Megson has managed to turn an unfashionable football team into a tight unit that can survive in the cut throat surroundings of the Premiership. I believe Gary Megson is one of the most under-rated managers in the Premiership. After the dismal period with Sammy Lee in charge, Megson has managed to steer Bolton clear of the relegation zone and into mid-table comfort.

A lot of this comes down to Bolton’s strong spine. Defender Gary Cahill is an absolute rock in the center of defense, and the quality left foot of Matty Taylor always provides a constant threat. The astute purchase of Mark Davies from Wolves in January also showed Megson’s nous in the transfer market. Okay, Johan Elmander may not have been the most successful, but with Kevin Davies leading the line, who needs expensive foreigner strikers?

The former West Brom boss has managed to form a tight knit group at the Wanderers, a team that is very difficult to beat especially on their home turf. The new season may not have started as brightly as the fans may have wanted, but Megson has proved time and time again that he has what it takes to the keep the Trotters in the top flight. It could be argued that his biggest coup so far was to persuade Gary Cahill to sign a new contract, who, in my opinion, is one of the best center halves in the Premiership.

Bolton could do far worse than stick with the man currently at the helm, and I believe that given time, the Trotters will once again be challenging at the higher end of the table and looking at the Europa League places up for grabs.

Is Mark being a little too optimistic about Bolton’s chances or is he spot on? Have your say below!
