Former England manager Fabio Capello has confirmed that new Manchester United manager David Moyes contacted him regarding Italian midfielder Daniele De Rossi. The Red Devils reportedly had a £10 million bid rejected by Roma as the transfer deadline approached, but Capello has taken it a step further by confirming that contact was made by Moyes in a bid to understand the player’s credentials.

Capello also stated his belief that the Roma midfielder should have joined the Premier League champions this summer as the Red Devils have a lot of ambition, compared to Roma’s sixth place finish in Serie A last season.

Capello knows De Rossi well from his time as manager of Roma, as Daniele De Rossi played under the current Russia manager from 2001 to 2004 at the Stadio Olimpico.

“David Moyes asked me for my opinion about De Rossi a few months ago and my opinion could only be positive,” Capello said, according to the Daily Express.

“If I were De Rossi, I would have gone to Manchester United and join a team where they have a lot of ambition.”

In the end, David Moyes only managed to bring in Belgian midfielder Marouane Fellaini in a £27.5 million deal, although the former Everton player is five years younger than De Rossi. De Rossi’s Roma side is currently sitting atop the Serie A table with a perfect start to the season, picking up four wins in their four matches.
