Tottenham defender Michael Dawson spoke out to praise English striker Jermain Defoe stating that Defoe is a great player for Tottenham. Defoe is facing heavy competition to be the lead striker at the club after manager Andre Villas-Boas signed Spanish center forward Roberto Soldado for £26 million this summer. Soldado has started all four matches for Spurs so far this season, scoring twice from the penalty spot.

Defoe told the BBC that he is unhappy sitting on the bench and wants to start, stating that he can be more effective playing a full ninety minutes rather than twenty or thirty at the end of a match. Although AVB has shown a clear preference for Soldado this season, Dawson insists that Defoe has the quality.

“He [Defoe] is sharp, I see him on a daily basis,” Dawson said, according to Goal.com.

“He’s a top player and a top finisher and two goals behind the legend [Chivers]. Jermain is a goalscorer, you see him, he loves scoring goals, it’s as simple as that.”

Defoe has yet to score after coming on as a substitute in three league matches for the club but has scored four times in two starts in the Europa League, showing that he has the ability to be a top striker. Defoe will have another chance to impress the manager today when Tottenham travel to Wales to play Cardiff City, the location where Cardiff stunned title hopefuls Manchester City 3-2 earlier in the season.

Tottenham were unbeatable against newly promoted sides last year, winning all six of their matches against the Premier League newcomers.

I love JD, I really do. His 5-goal performance against Wigan a few years ago convinced me to buy my first ever authentic shirt/jersey for any team.

But he's had ample opportunity to demonstrate that he's the one to lead the team up front, and it's never happened. I hope we keep him and he keeps scoring at every opportunity, but I don't see him as the player he seems to want to be.
