Theo Walcott finally got off the mark this season when he netted a marvelous goal for Arsenal on Wednesday. The Gunners defeated French side Marseille 2-1 in a Champions League group stage match and Walcott put in the first goal with a volley off a botched clearance. Although it took Walcott until mid September to score this season, the winger is hoping there will be more to come as he started slow last year and ended up being the club’s leading goal scorer in the Premier League.

“The cross came in and the full back missed it,” Walcott said, according to Arsenal’s official website. ”It felt like the ball was in the air for a decade and I managed to keep my eye on it and [it was] pure technique into the top corner.

“It meant a lot getting off the mark [for the season]. Hopefully there are going to be more to come now. I started pretty late last year and I finished as top goalscorer so it’s a good sign. I’m pretty sure of that.”

Arsenal’s victory on Wednesday brings their win streak up to six consecutive matches in all competitions, a run of form that Walcott attributes to consistency as the catalyst. The winger echoed his manager’s words that although they’ve been strong away from home, the side needs to be better at the Emirates. Walcott, however, is proud of the way his team have played so far this season.

“It just shows how consistent we are away from home,” Walcott said, according to Arsenal’s official website.

“We just need to be a bit more consistent at home now, that’s the next big step. If we show that, we can really go far this season. I really believe that. That record shows how much hard work everyone has [done] and it’s definitely something to be proud of, being part of that. It just shows how special this team is and how gifted these players are. I think we’re starting to believe that and you can see that in the performances.”

Walcott continued on to praise currently in-form midfielder Aaron Ramsey. Ramsey is off to a sensational start for the Gunners this season, scoring six goals in seven matches and providing excellent defensive work for the club.

“The likes of Aaron Ramsey has shone in every single game,” Walcott said, according to Arsenal’s official website.

“It’s beautiful to play with him. It’s fantastic to see him playing very well. He’s had a lot of injury problems and I’m so happy for him.”
