Chelsea defender Branislav Ivanovic spoke out following Chelsea’s surprising 2-1 defeat at Stamford Bridge to Swiss side FC Basel in the Champions League on Wednesday night to reveal his belief that the club need to move on and use the match as an example for the future. Ivanovic is ready to put the disappointing loss behind him as he feels it’s only the first game in the competition and the club can recover if they play well moving forward.

Chelsea started off well in the first half, taking the lead just before the break on a goal from Oscar. The side was unable to finish off Basel, however, as the Swiss team equalized before scoring the match-winner less than ten minutes before the final whistle. Chelsea fielded a side that hasn’t had much time together this year with Marco van Ginkel, Samuel Eto’o, Willian, and David Luiz all starting for the club; three new signings and a defender, Luiz, who has only recently recovered from an injury.

“It’s a bad start in the Champions League but it’s just the first game,” Ivanovic said to Chelsea’s official website.

“We have to stand up, show the character in other games and this situation has to be a good example for the future. We can’t go back and have to look forward.”

Chelsea’s loss comes after the club fell to Everton 1-0 last Saturday, dropping them into sixth in the Premier League table. The Blues will host Fulham this Saturday at Stamford Bridge in a London derby.
