Wenger unveils starting XI v Marseille

Mesut Ozil makes his second straight start for Arsenal

By | 18th September 2013

Arsene Wenger has named an extremely strong starting eleven for tonight’s Champions League match against Ligue 1 giants Marseille. Mesut Ozil has overcome his recent bout with a flu virus and finds himself in the Arsenal starting eleven for the second straight time after making his debut against Sunderland on Saturday in Arsenal’s 3-0 win.

Ozil will help form an attacking trio behind in-form striker Olivier Giroud, who has scored in all of the Gunners’ Premier League matches this season. Jack Wilshere and Theo Walcott occupy the attacking midfield positions alongside Ozil, while on-fire Aaron Ramsey and Mathieu Flamini will provide cover from central midfield.

Per Mertesacker and Laurent Koscielny man the center of defense in front of usual starter Wojciech Szczęsny, with normal starters Bacary Sagna and Kieran Gibbs surrounding them on the flanks.

The match is Arsenal’s first Champions League match of the season as they kick off play in Group F. The group is widely considered this year’s “group of death” as they’re joined by fellow European giants Marseille, Napoli, and Champions League runners-up Borussia Dortmund.

Wenger has already stated that he is targeting 10 points in the group stage, so three points today would help them charge towards that target.

The match kicks off in 40 minutes from the Stade Velodrome in Marseille, France.
