Manchester City defender Micah Richards tweeted praise for teammates Joleon Lescott and Matija Nastasic after last night’s 3-0 Champions League win over Czech champions Viktoria Plzeň. Lescott was replaced by captain Vincent Kompany in the heart of City’s defense after a string of impressive recent performances, while youngster Matija Nastasic earned yet another start following his early season injury.
Richards tweeted after the match expression his bewilderment that commentators continue to question City’s defensive pair, labeling both defenders as class.
I hate when commentators disregard @JoleonLescott both him and nastasic are class!

Nastasic has been a revelation since joining the Citizens from Fiorentina last year, and is quickly growing into his role as a key defender for the club. The Premier League runners-up have already experienced an early season injury crisis, with Richards, Kompany, new signing Martin Demichelis, and youngster Nastasic already all being sidelined. Joleon Lescott manned the defense during their absences, while Nastasic was the first to return from injury a few weeks ago.
Kompany’s return was greeted with delight by City’s traveling support as the Belgian led Manuel Pellegrini’s side to a clean sheet in their opening Champions League match. Richards has also recently returned to training, and could make a return to first team action soon.
Fortunately for City, it appears that Kompany will now be match fit in time to face Manchester United in this Sunday’s derby match.
