FC Porto central defender Eliaquim Mangala has been linked with a move from Portugal to Manchester City and although he is flattered by the interest of a big English club, he insists he would like to stay with Porto. The 22 year old French center-back revealed his happiness with his current side while also downplaying the possible transfer.

Mangala reportedly has a £38 million release clause that is pricing out City, who are only willing to spend £30 million on the defender.

“Man City is nowadays one of the big clubs in the world so you are always flattered by their interest in you,” Mangala told Sky Sports.

“[But] I am delighted to continue and progress with Porto. I like the club and I never asked to leave and they were not willing to sell me in the first place. People talk about my valuation as high but it is not me who prices me. But it does not affect me, my job is to come and perform at my best on the green surface.”

The signing of the defender could have proved useful for City this season as they are currently going through somewhat of a defensive crisis. The availability of center-backs has grown thin at the Etihad as Vincent Kompany picked up an injury during City’s first match of the season, Micah Richards has been injured since the club’s preseason, and new signing Martin Demichelis has been ruled out for six weeks with damaged knee ligaments. The depleted center-back position leaves the club with just experienced defender Joleon Lescott and promising 20 year old Matija Nastasic, who only returned from an ankle injury the weekend before the international break.
