Brazilian defender Thiago Silva has admitted that he wanted to play alongside Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney in France. Rooney was heavily linked with a move away from Old Trafford this summer, but after refusing to hand in a transfer request he remained with David Moyes’ side, and has since re-established himself as a pivotal starter.

Silva, though, admits that he would have liked to see his club Paris Saint-Germain sign the striker following a summer of rumors linking Rooney with the French capital. PSG were considered one of the few clubs in the world who could afford to sign Rooney due to his high wages, with Arsenal also constantly linked with the English international.

Silva made it clear that playing against Rooney has made him admire the player, and he would’ve cherished linking up at the club level.

“Wayne Rooney would have been great to play with,” Silva said, according to the Sunday Express“He is one of the best strikers in the world and this is also a guy who has scored against me every time I’ve played him.  That goal at the Maracana still irks me.”

Both Silva and Rooney finished last season as champions of their respective leagues, with PSG taking home the Ligue 1 title under new Real Madrid boss Carlo Ancelotti. Silva’s excellent display has given him a key role in the heart of PSG’s defense, opening the door for French defender Mamadou Sakho to leave for Liverpool this summer.

Rooney, meanwhile, has recently suffered from a gashed head and has been forced to sit out United’s most recent match against Liverpool as well as England’s two World Cup qualifiers during this international break.
