Everton are looking to secure a new and improved contract for Leighton Baines before the start of the January transfer window. According to The GuardianManchester United are still keen on trying to lure the left-back to Old Trafford and may return with a new bid for the 28 year old in January. Everton rejected multiple bids for the English defender over the course of the summer and with United failing to secure a left-back over the last few months, the Toffees are worried that manager David Moyes and vice chairman Ed Woodward will come knocking once again on the door of Baines.

United saw a deal for Real Madrid left-back Fabio Coentrao fall through at the last minute on Monday as Real failed to get their own left-back replacement for Coentrao. The Red Devils were, however, able to lure Belgian midfielder Marouane Fellaini away from Everton in a £27.5 million deal minutes before the close of the transfer window.

Everton were able to replace Fellaini with Irish youngster James McCarthy as the former Wigan player signed from the Latics in a £13 million deal. The Toffees also signed Gareth Barry and Romelu Lukaku on season-long loans as they strengthen a side that is hopeful of convincing Baines to stay in 2014.
