Tottenham manager Andre Villas Boas has singled striker Jermain Defoe out for praise following the player’s two goal performance in yesterday’s Europa League win over Dinamo Tbilisi. Tottenham ran out 3-0 winners after Defoe’s brace and a goal from midfielder Lewis Holtby, handing them a convincing 8-0 win on aggregate to propel them into the group stages of the competition.

Defoe has seen his place in the starting eleven under fire this season following the arrival of Spanish striker Roberto Soldado, with the Spaniard grabbing two goals in as many Premier League matches to give Spurs a perfect start to their league campaign. Defoe has made just two substitute appearances this season, but Andre Villas Boas points out that the competition at White Hart Lane is healthy for his players.

“Jermain has the goalscoring ability and once again he proved it tonight,” Villas Boas told¬†Sky Sports following his side’s Europa League win.¬†”What we are trying to do is build a strong team with strong players and everyone has to compete for a place.

“We always want to make teams stronger than before so players who are in the top five of Tottenham’s all-time goalscorers can only make you stronger.”

Tottenham take on bitter rivals Arsenal in the first north London derby of the season on Sunday. Spurs have strengthened heavily this summer, welcoming Paulinho, Etienne Capoue, Nacer Chadli, and Soldado to the club, with Erik Lamela and Vlad Chiriches expected to be unveiled soon.

Defoe, meanwhile, will join up with Roy Hodgson’s England side on Monday with the transfer deadline looming.
