Manchester United defender Phil Jones has expressed his excitement about the upcoming Champions League campaign. The Premier League champions found out their fate in this afternoon’s group stage draw from Monaco, and will be liking their chances in Group A. The Red Devils will take on Bayer Leverkusen, Shakhtar Donetsk, and Real Sociedad in David Moyes’ first Champions League campaign with his new club, and Phil Jones is hoping that the club can maintain their good history in the competition.

“We all know what happened last season – football can be a cruel game at times,” Jones said of last year’s Round of 16 failure against Real Madrid, according to Goal.com. ”But hopefully we can do well in it again this year and really stamp our mark in the Champions League.

“It’s always been a huge competition for this club. We want to continue the success the club has had in it in the past.”

Jones and his United teammates will be pleased with their group stage draw, as the Premier League champions avoided the likes of Ligue 1 winners Paris St. Germain, Rafa Benitez’s resurgent Napoli side, and Serie A champions Juventus. The group of death in this year’s tournament sees Barcelona, AC Milan, Ajax, and Celtic all square off, while Group B is home to both Real Madrid and Juventus, along with a tricky away trip to Turkish side Galatasaray.

Phil Jones and United take on Liverpool this Sunday at Anfield in the day’s early match ahead of the north London derby.
