According to English media outlet The Independent, Premier League side Arsenal are set to go head to head with Ligue 1 champions Paris Saint Germain for the signing of Newcastle United midfielder Yohan Cabaye. The Gunners saw a bid of £10 million rejected by Newcastle yesterday, and have been the subject of criticism for the manner in which they approached Newcastle for the midfielder.

Magpies boss Alan Pardew was extremely unhappy that Arsenal’s bid came just hours before the club’s opening Premier League fixture against Manchester City, forcing Pardew to drop the player from his squad. Newcastle fell to a heavy 4-0 defeat at the Etihad Stadium, and it looks as if Arsenal will now face stiff competition for the midfielder’s signature.

Paris Saint Germain have already splashed the cash this summer by signing former Napoli striker Edinson Cavani, but have got off to a slow start in their new Ligue 1 campaign. The club drew Ajaccio 1-1 over the weekend, representing their second consecutive 1-1 draw in league play this season. Laurent Blanc’s men now sit in 13th in the Ligue 1 table after two matches, suggesting they could use the services of Cabaye in the center of their midfield.
