Agger’s agent reveals failed bid

Barcelona's hunt for a centerback continues

By | 15th August 2013

Liverpool center-back Daniel Agger’s agent Per Steffensen has indicated that La Liga champions Barcelona have had a £15 million bid for his client rejected by the Reds, with Liverpool demanding a higher price for the Danish international.

The Dane’s proposed move depends primarily on whether Barca can land Chelsea center-back David Luiz, who is valued at around £30 million and has been subject to a transfer for the majority of the current transfer window. However, the west London club are demanding £43 million for the Brazilian, causing Barcelona to look around for other options.

Agger has been mentioned along with a few other center-backs, including Paris Saint-Germain’s Mamadou Sakho and Tottenham’s Jan Vertonghen, as candidates who Barcelona have shown interest in should Luiz’s move to the Nou Camp fail to transpire within the coming weeks.

“We are aware that Barcelona have made an offer for Daniel that Liverpool have rejected,” Agger’s agent told The Independent.

“Daniel has a contract with Liverpool for the next three years and it would be up to the clubs to agree a fee for his transfer in order for that to change.”

Since transferring to Anfield from Brondby in 2006, Agger has played his way into Liverpool’s starting eleven and established himself as a first-choice center-back, appearing 155 times for the Reds and recently being named the club’s vice-captain following Jamie Carragher’s retirement at the end of the last campaign.

His technical abilities and composure in the back have earned him praise, helping Liverpool secure FA Cup and League Cup trophies as well as winning a Danish Football Player of the Year Award in 2007 and 2012.
