West Ham have completed the signing of Liverpool winger Stewart Downing according to West Ham’s official website. The 29-year-old winger agreed to a four-year deal with the club after passing his medical on Monday.

“I’m very excited. It’s a great opportunity for me being here, it’s a great Club and I’m really excited to get going. I’m ready and I’m fit for the first game against Cardiff City. I’ve played a decent few games for Liverpool in pre-season, so there will be no problems on that front,” said Downing to the team’s official site.

“It’s all happened quickly, but I’m really excited and hoping to play a part on Saturday.”

Multiple media outlets have reported that the transfer fee for the attacker is close to £6 million for the English international, who leaves Liverpool after only two seasons at the Anfield club.

Downing has spent his entire career in England, and only one season outside the Premier League, playing for Middlesborough, Sunderland, Aston Villa, and Liverpool before moving to the Hammers today. Downing spent his one season outside England’s top flight with Sunderland in the 2003/04 season, playing seven Championship matches for the club and scoring three times.

The winger has become West Ham’s fifth signing of the summer, joining the club along with former Liverpool teammate Andy Carroll as well as left back Razvan Rat and goalkeeper Adrian.

Downing was in and out of Brendan Rodgers’s Liverpool squad last season, making 29 appearances for the club last season while scoring three times and adding in five assists.

The attacker has primarily been know as a left winger throughout his career, but has also been known to play full-back in times of desperation, as the 29-year-old started his career there.
