North London outfit Arsenal have reportedly agreed to a £14 million fee with German giants Bayern Munich for midfielder Luiz Gustavo, according to English newspaper Metro. The Gunners have reportedly fended off Chelsea and Wolfsburg who had reportedly also been interested in signing the player.

The Gunners have only made one signing this summer, snapping up striker Yaya Sanogo on a free transfer, but if the club is able to agree to personal terms with Gustavo, he would become Arsene Wenger’s first big signing of the summer. The London club have already lost out on striker Gonzalo Higuain to Napoli, a player who they were consistently connected to throughout the beginning of the summer, and have been involved in a heavy transfer saga with Premier League rival Liverpool for striker Luis Suarez’s signature.

The 26-year-old midfielder started his career with Brazilian club Corinthians Alagoano, moving on loan twice before settling at German club Hoffenheim for four seasons. The midfielder made 99 appearances for the German outfit before moving to Bayern Munich in 2011, where he has been a starter since arriving. However, this season new manager Pep Guardiola has made it apparent that Gustavo will have a hard time earning playing time behind the likes of Bastian Schweinsteiger, new-comer Thiago Alcantara, Toni Kroos, Mario Gotze, and Javi Martínez, all of whom are ahead of the Brazilian, according to the Metro report.

The midfielder is best known as a holding or defensive midfielder, but has also been known to play center back in times of desperation.
