Wenger says Rooney at Chelsea changes nothing

The Gunners boss believes it's a challenge wherever Wayne plays

After finishing fourth in the Premier League last season, Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger insists that his job will not be made any easier or harder if want-away Manchester United forward Wayne Rooney transfers to title rivals Chelsea.

The French manager expressed his opinion of the England international claiming that any title rival, specifically Chelsea, that signs Rooney will make Arsenal’s competition even fiercer but will also weaken the club that won the title last year.

“With Rooney, [Chelsea] will be even more dangerous for sure. I rate Rooney highly and unfortunately we fight with Manchester United and Chelsea,” Wenger said, according to Goal.com.

“So, on one front, if he goes then Manchester United will be weaker, that’s quite good for us. But if he changes to Chelsea then they will be stronger – which is not good for us.”

Rooney played second fiddle to United teammate Robin van Persie for the latter half of last season, leading to a final-day drop from United’s squad against West Bromwich Albion after a fall-out with former manager Sir Alex Ferguson. Since then, the striker has been pushing towards the exit door, with Chelsea reportedly leading the chase to sign the disgruntled Englishman.

However, new Manchester United manager David Moyes, who previously worked with Rooney as a teenager at Everton, has continuously stated that the striker is not for sale despite the 27-year-old’s desire to leave Old Trafford. And after seeing two bids from Chelsea rejected last month, Rooney must now take matters into his own hands if he is serious about a transfer, meaning a transfer request would have to be handed in to United’s backroom staff, according to The Guardian.
