Who is the mysterious goal scorer?

In this week’s Wednesday Wonder, Kevin Albrecht discusses Swansea City’s two main strikers and how the duo will perform this season.

Who: Swansea striker pairing Michu and Bony
Why: Unstoppable together against Malmo
What: The two look set to make trouble in the Premier League this season

Swansea City finished ninth last year in the Premiership, a feat that no one expected of the club in it’s second Premier League season and a story line that just isn’t getting the attention it deserves. Last year, Spanish midfielder/forward/striker Miguel Michu was brought to the club seemingly out of nowhere and lit up the pitch, scoring 22 goals in all competitions for the Swans. This year, the club have added Wilfried Bony in a club-record signing of £12 million, making the club even that more dangerous as Bony was marvelous for Dutch side Vitesse Arnhem last year, scoring 31 league goals in 30 appearances.

The two are already off to a scintillating start for Swansea as they combined to score three of the four goals in the first leg of Swansea’s Europa League match against Swedish club Malmo at the Liberty Stadium, with the two forwards looking untouchable. Michu led off the scoring, taking the ball down past a falling Malmo defender to calmly slot it into the corner past the keeper, as we saw him do so many times last year.

Then it was Bony’s turn to join in on the romp as he leaped what seemed like a kilometer in the air to put home a floating Wayne Routledge cross from inside the box. The scoring continued as Michu took a pass at the top of the box and went around a Malmo defender to put a shot low off the post and right into the path of the streaking Bony, who hammered the ball in the back of the open net.

The duo was frightening to watch for any Premier League opponent, as it seems Swansea will have no shortage of goals this year. With their season opening in less than a fortnight, the club seem to already be on form and ready for their difficult schedule. In the first six matches of the season, Swansea will face off against Tottenham, Liverpool, and Arsenal, as well as opening their season at home to Premier League title holders Manchester United.

The club will need the best from Michu and Bony during their early season fixtures. Michu showed that he can score against the top squads in England last year, as he netted against Chelsea and Tottenham, twice against Manchester United, and three times against Arsenal. We will see right away if he can repeat his success against top five clubs and if Bony is up to the challenge as well. If the club is able to get off to a strong start, they may be able to push for more trophies after winning the League Cup last year.

My personal prediction? Michu and Bony will combine for over 35 goals in the Prem this season, making them one of the most deadly squads in the league and will challenge for a top five position. The Capital One Cup last year was just the beginning of a successful run for Swansea – there’s more to come from this talented side, especially up front.

Just for fun – watch all 22 of Michu’s goals last season in all competition. The forward knows how to score!
