Juventus and Italy legend Alessandro Del Piero has tipped his former club for the Serie A title following their successful defense of their crown last season. Juventus have struggled during their preseason campaign, with their most high profile loss coming against Everton in the International Champions Cup, but Del Piero believes there’s nothing to worry about ahead of the new campaign.

Juventus comfortably finished nine points head of closest rivals Napoli last season, but the runners-up have strengthened with the addition of Rafa Benitez as manager, Pepe Reina on loan as the club’s new number one, and the signing of Argentine sensation Gonzalo Higuain from Real Madrid. Nevertheless, Del Piero feels that the club’s recent title win proves that they’re odds-on favorites to win a third consecutive Serie A crown.

“Juve are in pole position, because the defending champion always has the advantage of starting in front,” Del Piero said according to Goal.com. “The friendly defeats shouldn’t worry them: you face teams who are further in their preparations, or who are competing in their league. Then there is the travelling.

“Juventus have great potential, and their new signings will not take long to express themselves at that level.”

Del Piero now plays for Australian side Sydney FC, and will have to watch new signing Carlos Tevez wear his former number 10 jersey at Juventus Stadium this season following the Argentine’s arrival in Italy from Manchester City. Tevez will be paired with fellow new signing Fernando Llorente.
