Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho has told the media that he believes he can get the best out of Spanish striker Fernando Torres. Torres made a splash in the world of football after three sensational seasons with Liverpool, but to date his £50 million move to Chelsea appears to be one of the biggest transfer flops in recent history. The Spaniard has scored just 15 Premier League goals in two and a half years at Stamford Bridge, but new boss Jose Mourinho says he can help the striker.
“I think I know Fernando quite well in terms of a player,” Mourinho said, according to FIFA.com. ”I think I know the best way for a team to play to try to get the best out of him, so I will try to help him, the same way I try to help other people.
“Sometimes it’s easy to say a player is not performing but that might not be fair because sometimes the way you play decides if someone is more comfortable or less comfortable on the pitch. He’s a striker more comfortable when he has space behind, when he has space for those runs, when he has space to get behind defenders.
Torres could have a huge role to play for the Blues this season, with Mourinho and company unable to complete a signing for a new striker this summer. The club have made an unsuccessful bid for Manchester United’s Wayne Rooney, and are now left with just Torres, young Belgian striker Romelu Lukaku, and former Newcastle striker Demba Ba ahead of the new season.
The trio have all failed to establish themselves with Chelsea, but Lukaku has provided a bright light since returning to Stamford Bridge after an extremely successful loan spell with West Bromwich Albion.
Mourinho’s comments suggest that he may be happy to start the new season with Torres still a factor in Chelsea’s attack, but it’s hard to rule out any potential moves from Chelsea’s owner, Roman Abramovich.
