When it comes to social media, athletes and celebrity rule the roost. The most followed person in the so-called “Twitterverse” is American pop star Justin Bieber, who leads the rest of the world with over 42 million followers. In the football world, though, there’s a big disparity between the top and the bottom of the Twitterverse, where the big stars have an immense following, and the Jermaine Pennants of the world are left with just over 3,400 followers (it’s true, follow him today!).

With the season quickly approaching and players rapidly tweeting about their preseason training camps, two a days, and new boots and kits, Premiership Talk dives in to see who is the king of the Twitterverse in the football world.

Unsurprisingly, that award goes to Real Madrid’s Cristiano Ronaldo. The former Ballon d’Or winner is the most followed footballer in the world with a staggering 19.8 million followers on the social network, making his account the 16th most followed account on all of Twitter. Who comes second, though? Perhaps surprisingly, Ronaldo’s teammate Kaka outranks his rivals. The Brazilian is a former Ballon d’Or winner himself, and during his time at AC Milan he became a cult figure among his home country as well as Milan supporters.

This infographic fromĀ Premiership Talk reveals some surprising statistics, and reveals that despite Ronaldo’s lead, it’s Kaka who has drawn more attention during the past three weeks on the social network as his former boss Carlo Ancelotti has taken the reins at Real Madrid.
