Spurs place Dempsey on transfer list

The Times reports that Dempsey is surplus to requirements

The Times is reporting that Tottenham Hotspur boss Andre Villas Boas has decided to transfer list American midfielder Clint Dempsey. The USA international had an average season with Spurs by his standards last season, and as the Portuguese manager improves his squad it appears Dempsey has been deemed surplus to requirements.

According to the report from The Times, Villas Boas is keen to find a buyer for the former Fulham player as he aims to further improve his squad. Tottenham have seen just one signing arrive at White Hart Lane this summer, as Brazilian midfielder Paulinho arrived at the club following the conclusion of the Confederations Cup.

The Brazilian’s arrival means that Spurs have Paulinho, Sandro, Scott Parker, Jake Livermore, Tom Huddlestone, Mousa Dembele, Gylfi Sigurdsson, and Lewis Holtby on the books as far as players who can play centrally in midfield, forcing Andre Villas Boas to clear some room. Dempsey, it appears, is one of the midfielders who will have to find a new home as a result, despite the fact that the American has two years remaining on his contract.

The same report from The Times states that Scott Parker’s White Hart Lane exit is also imminent, as QPR line up a move for the former West Ham United midfielder, which would see him join up with former boss Harry Redknapp.

Should Dempsey be transfer listed? Where will he end up? Have your say below!

So true but it looks like he is letting Huddlestone go too :-(

  2. Jeffrey Kaye says:

AVB should be mindful of his big mistake last season and have enough depth in the squad to rotate players for the Europa League, not try and play the same players in all competitions.

  3. R.Cleveland Aaron says:

Onrae Destouche, how many times did we see Van der Vaart chase a ball? Would be a mistake to let Clint go. He may not be starting 11 but we need players who can score goals. Out of the top 6 sides last season we scored the least goals.

  4. Onrae Destouche says:

He's not good enough uncle, he should definitely be sold. Doesn't work hard enough for me #Can'tStandHim

  5. I've always been a big fan of Dempsey, even before he joined Spurs. I hope he stays. A very good squad player. His late equaliser against man u at WHL will live long in the memory…

  6. Einar Einarsson says:

but to be honest, i would not sell Dempsey either. quality player…but i can understand AVB… the midfield is getting packed.

  7. Einar Einarsson says:

sell sigurdsson ahead of dempsey? you are a funny guy ;)

  8. Lawrence Jones says:

I agree with most of what Johnny said, but I think Sigurdsson should be kept on. Certainly Parker and Livermore should be offloaded. Huddlestone, although I'll be sad to see leave, is another one to let go, for his own career sake if I'm to be honest.
Dempsey scores goals, and with a full pre-season, would be a vital cog in the wheel.
BIG mistake if we let him go IMHO.

  9. James Foley says:

Vital to what exactly? Much respect to Dempsey and I'll be sad to see him go but Spurs need players of higher quality.

  11. Shuban Begum says:

Harsh on clint but I think if we are to go the next level we need to add quality, and free up out wage bill.

Parker, Huddlestone, Siggurdson and Livermore would be my first bets to be off loaded also. I think Clint is a good player just not top 4. Yes he has got vital goals, but there is no room for sentiment in the game

  12. Brian Lofrumento says:

Wow, awesome points! I agree with you all around…lots of unnecessary competition, and it's clear that Dempsey deserves his spot. His productivity was far higher than the other players' you mentioned, and after such a pursuit for him last summer I don't get it either. Thanks for the comment!

  13. This is ridiculous of Spurs! Less than a year after snatching Clint Dempsey away from the hands of Liverpool on transfer deadline day, Spurs are looking to offload him. He might not have the greatest of season, but his contribution to Spurs was still positive. He scored some big important goals for Spurs. Would Spurs have beaten Man United at OT without Dempsey? Some of the goals he scored are vital. His contribution to the team is valuable. Dont forget that he was facing some fitness issue at the beginning of last season. It explains why he wasnt able to play to his best abilities. Yes, Spurs have bought Paulinho and thats a great season for them. Now that the midfield have tighten, by no means should Dempsey be the first or the choosen one to be offloaded. Clint Dempsey can play in central midfield, but he is an attacking midfielder by trade, an area where Spurs are definitely lacking in quality at the moment. Losing Dempsey will mean that Spurs will only have Holtby and Sigurdsson as their natural attacking midfielder. It is better if Spurs keep hold or Dempsey. He brings something different to the former 2 players mentioned. If Spurs are looking to offload their midfielders, it should be the likes of Parker, Huddlestone, Siggurdson and Livermore. Certainly not Dempsey over them. Spurs should look to keep hold of Clint Dempsey while adding another attacking midfilder, a top class striker and a left back if they are looking to make the top four for the 2013/14 season.
