Sky Sports reports that Arsenal are set to up their interest

After Arsenal were thought to lose interest in Swansea defender and Wales captain Ashley Williams following Swansea’s high asking price, Sky Sports is reporting that Arsene Wenger has become interested in acquiring the center back once again.

With Thomas Vermaelen’s back injury potentially putting the center back on the sidelines for up to three months, Arsenal are looking to find a replacement for the Belgian international, and the experienced Ashley Williams might be that player.

The Gunners are in a desperate situation as they now only have two center backs to begin the season: Laurent Koscielny and Per Mertesacker. If an injury falls to either one of these two players, Arsenal could be in serious trouble with their back four, a place they cannot afford to be in if they want to challenge for a Premier League title this season.

Sky Sports is reporting that 28 year old Williams would jump at the chance to move to a team that will be seeing Champions League action this season, as the center back has never played for a Champions League team.

Arsenal have just over a month to fill the whole that Vermaelen could leave in their defense as they begin the season at home against Aston Villa on August 17th.
