Three strikers Chelsea can still pursue

Kevin Albrecht analyzes all of the rumors around Chelsea

By | 9th July 2013

With Jose Mourinho having returned to manage the Blues, the former Real Madrid boss has focused his attention this summer on finding strikers that fit his system. Mourinho is looking at a number of front men and it’s still unclear which, if any, he will sign.

Here are three of the top prospects that are still up for grabs in this summer’s transfer market:

Edinson Cavani

The Uruguayan striker was sensational last year, scoring 29 goals in 34 appearances in Serie A for Napoli. He also showed his scoring prowess during the Confederations Cup, netting three goals in four matches as Uruguay finished fourth in the competition. Napoli has set the buyout clause for Cavani at £56 million.

According to the Sky Sports, Chelsea may miss out on Cavani, as French club Paris Saint-Germain launched a £43 million bid last week to acquire the striker. While Napoli may have declined this bid, this clearly puts PSG and Chelsea into a bidding war, something Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich may not want to be involved with. The Russian owner already dished out £50 million for another 26 year old striker in 2011 (Fernando Torres), which hasn’t worked out exactly as Chelsea have hoped.

With PSG keen to secure the services of Cavani, Chelsea have been linked with Brazilian striker Hulk. The big forward was only sold to Zenit St Petersburg last year for a huge £52 million transfer but has already been linked with a move this summer to another club.

According to Sky Sports, Chelsea, Tottenham, and French side Monaco have been linked with the striker, who is open to leaving for a club with better competition. A strong showing at the Confederations Cup only strengthened the interest that clubs have shown the 26 year old forward. His strongest year was the 2010-2011 campaign for Porto, scoring 23 goals in 26 league matches and helping the club to win the treble (Portuguese League, Portuguese Cup, and Europa League).

According to Sky Sports, Chelsea were believed to have put in a bid back in June for Hulk for £35 million. However, it is reported that Zenit are looking for a price closer to the £50 million mark.

Robert Lewandowski

If Hulk doesn’t pan out for the Blues, Chelsea have been also been linked 24 year old Polish goal scorer Robert Lewandowski, according to The Daily Mail. Chelsea were reported as early as 2011 to have shown interest in the Poland international, according to Sky Sports.

Lewandowski helped Borussia Dortmund win back to back Bundesliga titles in 2011 and 2012, scoring 22 goals in 34 Bundesliga matches in the 2010-2011 season. He topped that in the 2011-2012 season, scoring 24 goals in 31 Bundesliga appearances. Last year he was sensational for BVB during a Champions League runners-up run that saw the front man net 10 g0als in 13 appearances.

However, it has come out that Lewandowski is likely to remain at Borossia Dortmund this year and head to Bundesliga rivals Bayern Munich next summer once his contract is over with BVB, according to Goal.comWith BVB manager Jurgen Klopp unwilling to sell Lewandowski and with the 24 year old’s heart set on heading to Allianz Arena in 2014, Chelsea may need to look elsewhere now for a front man.

Who’s left?

Enter Aston Villa striker Christian Benteke, who according to BBC Sport, put in a transfer request this morning. The 22 year old striker is an aerial threat who can also finish with his feet. He helped Villa avoid relegation last season as he scored 19 goals in 34 appearances.

Aston Villa are willing to sell the striker should a team put in a bid that meets their valuation of the large Belgian striker. is reporting that Chelsea are preparing a bid for the striker, meaning that Benteke could end up being the forward that Mourinho ends up signing.

This is unbelievably poor journalism! Cavani to PSG is as good as done with CFC not willing to pay the €63 release clause and Klopp and KHR have both stated that Lewandowski will join Bayern next season!
