American international Jozy Altidore is reportedly in talks with Premier League side Sunderland over a summer transfer, reports the Daily Star. The striker has previously had a spell in the Premier League with Hull City as a 20 year old, but failed to impress as he only picked up one goal during his loan spell.

Now, though, Altidore has transformed into a proven goalscorer, especially after netting an astonishing 23 league goals in the Dutch Eredivisie for AZ Alkmaar in just 21 league starts. On top of that, the striker has been impressive for the United States national team, netting in four consecutive matches for Jurgen Klinsmann’s World Cup hopefuls.

Sunderland are preparing for the new season with new boss Paulo Di Canio for the first time, after the controversial Italian took charge towards the tail end of last season. The Italian saw his side finish in 17th place last season, just three points above the relegation zone. He’ll want to add firepower such as Altidore to his squad to help them find more goals as they strive to find a mid-table spot this season.

Altidore is still only 23 years of age, representing buckets of potential for the Black Cats if they can land the former New York Red Bulls star.
