Manchester United target moves away

Axel Witsel moves from Benfica to Zenit

By | 3rd September 2012

Former Benfica midfielder Axel Witsel has secured a big-money move to Zenit St. Petersburg after Manchester United chose not to step up their pursuit of the Belgium international last month.

United were reportedly quoted a fee over €30 million for the 23-year old and after regarding the sum as too high, the Premier League runners-up took themselves out of the running.

However, Witsel remained on the radar of Real Madrid too, until they completed the capture of Luka Modric. At that point, the player stayed put in Portugal before a massive bid in the region of €40 million was accepted from Zenit earlier today.

Witsel, who has scored five goals in 30 appearances for his nation, joins former Porto star Hulk at Zenit, who also cost the Russian high-spenders approximately the same.

While Witsel once seemed to be high on the priority list of the Red Devils, his move is unlikely to cause any disappointment at Old Trafford.

United are enjoying a vibrant midfield composition, which revolves around youngster Tom Cleverley, legendary veteran Paul Scholes, and their freshly crowned August Player of the Month, Shinji Kagawa.
