Gunners aim to loan out Chelsea ace

Michael Essien could be headed to Arsenal

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger has been tight-lipped about the prospect of signing another midfielder to replace Alex Song but it seems that he can steal a massive bargain in the form of Chelsea star Michael Essien.

Essien, who was once considered one of the Premier League’s strongest defensive midfielders, has struggled for a consistent place in the Blues’ startling line-up since returning from a serious injury last season and finds himself significantly down the pecking order at Stamford Bridge in this campaign.

With Chelsea also having Raul Meireles, Josh McEachran, Oriol Romeu, Florent Malouda, and Yossi Benayoun in addition to the star trio of Frank Lampard, Ramires, and John Obi Mikel in the midfield, manager Roberto Di Matteo may allow Essien to secure a loan move before the window shuts today.

However, as the Daily Mail reports, it is unclear whether the Blues would be willing to send out such a prominent player to a direct Premier League rival.

The Gunners were previously linked with Turkish midfielder Nuri Sahin before he moved on loan to Liverpool from Real Madrid.

Rennes midfielder Yann M’Vila has also been linked with the club for over a year now but both parties dismissed a significant interest in transfer talks earlier this summer.

Another strong midfield option for Wenger is U.S. international Clint Dempsey, who has been desperate to move away from Fulham in pursuit of Champions League football.

Many Arsenal supporters have voiced concerns regarding the club’s current midfield quality, with the injury prone Abou Diaby struggling to match the box-to-box activity of Song.

Wenger has repeatedly pointed to the forthcoming return of Jack Wilshere and potential improvement in Aaron Ramsey’s play as factors that may prevent Arsenal from adding to their midfield.
