Returning Gunner looks to ‘crucial’ year

Diaby targets full fitness throughout next season

By | 27th July 2012

Arsenal midfielder Abou Diaby is aware that the 2012-13 is critical for him if he is to finally put his injury-prone past behind him.

The lack of full fitness has restricted the 26-year old Diaby to merely 26 appearances across all competitions in the last two seasons and as he looks to finally regain full fitness in the coming season, the Frenchman has praised manager Arsene Wenger for supporting him all along.

“That makes me feel confident – it is always nice to have the confidence of the manager. I’m fit now, I have been training since the beginning of pre-season and also did a rehabilitation session during my holidays – so now I feel great,” Diaby was quoted on Arsenal’s official website.

He added: “I know that when I am fit, I can be good on the pitch. My main target this season is to be fit and if I am then everything will be good for me.

“It is definitely important – I need to be fit in order to complete the whole season. It is so important that I stay fit because last season I was injured many times and couldn’t play much, so this year is crucial.”

The Gunners’ overseas tour of Asia, sponsored by The Emirates, presents a key opportunity for Diaby to impress Wenger ahead of the new season’s kick-off in about three weeks.

In fact, this evening’s friendly exhibition against Premier League champions Manchester City in Beijing is the type of match where an impressive performance can result in a lasting impression.
