RDM talks bittersweet Euro 2012 feelings
Manager has mixed emotions about the outcome
Chelsea boss Roberto Di Matteo was disappointed to see his native Italy lose to Spain in Sunday’s Euro 2012 final but has expressed his excitement about the form of Chelsea duo Fernando Torres and Juan Mata.
Torres came off the bench to score Spain’s third goal and provide an assist for Mata to make it 4-0, which stood as the emphatic final score line in favor of the reigning world and European champions.
A lot was made of the chemistry between Blues teammates Torres and Mata, and Di Matteo hopes that the pair can translate that form to their club football as well.
“What that group of players [the Spain national team] have achieved is amazing. I’m very happy for Torres and Mata, despite the fact they beat Italy in the final, it was a great to finish to their season with such a big achievement, and fantastic for them personally as well,” the Blues manager stated in an interview at the club’s official website.
Expressing hope that Torres can continue to lead Chelsea’s front-line following the departure of legendary striker Didier Drogba, RDM continued: “Didier was an outstanding player for the club who achieved a lot of success, but we have to move on.
“He’s not here anymore and the players will rise to the occasion and fill in. It’s a team sport, we have Fernando, [Daniel] Sturridge and [Romelu] Lukaku, so we have enough quality.”
A good measure of the Blues’ quality would be for all to see when they square off against Premier League winners Manchester City in the Community Shield in a month’s time.
