Spurs target slams current club

Vertonghen frustrated about Ajax demeanor

By | 29th June 2012

Ajax defender Jan Vertonghen has slammed the Dutch club for not only complicating his impending transfer to Tottenham Hotspur, but also for leaking sensitive financial details without his consent.

The two teams agreed a transfer fee of £9.5 million for the 25-year old Ajax captain, who was voted as the Dutch Footballer of the Year last season.

Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy has been pushing for Vertonghen to realize his Premier League dream but the player admits that the frustrating financial complications in his deal may take longer to be resolved than initially expected.

The conflict is allegedly surrounding Vertonghen’s contractual entitlement, which is confirmed to be 15% of the transfer fee.

“As it looks now, I’ll be at Ajax on July 2. I’m hoping for a solution but I’m not expecting a solution,” a disappointed Vertonghen was quoted in the Metro.

He added: “This is a shame. I thought that it would be sorted out much sooner.”

Regarding the news of his 15% entitlement being leaked in the media, the Belgium international asserted: “I’m shocked. The percentage is correct — it’s unbelievable. I know that at Ajax a lot of things are leaking.

“When you hear it about other football players, you don’t feel it. It’s different when it’s about yourself.”

Ajax boss Frank de Boer is not showing much sympathy and believes that as the natural order of business would dictate, Vertonghen must train with the club next week if his transfer does not go through.

“We’re very close but if the deal is not done, Jan must train next week with us,” the manager stated.

Always had a lot of sympathy for Ajax who have always punched well above their weight but this is embarrassing and downright petty of them. I am sure that they have their reasons but if it is in his contract why the delay? Sounds funny to me.
