Spaniard: ‘Adam moment’ was an influence

Ramos happy to guide holders to the final again

By | 28th June 2012

Sergio Ramos admits that his disastrous Champions League semifinal penalty miss inspired him to step up and convert the spot-kick that propelled Spain to the Euro 2012 final at Portugal’s expense last night.

Ramos, 26, was representing Real Madrid when he skied his penalty kick against Bayern Munich in April.

The Spaniard’s failed kick became a butt of many jokes around the football world due to its striking similarity to the infamous penalty miss from Liverpool’s Charlie Adam in the Carling Cup final in February.

While the Reds went on to win that competition nonetheless, Real were not so lucky and some even dubbed their right-back as Sergio ‘Adam’ Ramos for the remainder of the season.

Yesterday evening, after 120 minutes of goalless football against a resilient Portugal side, Ramos had a shot at redemption and he confidently took it all in his stride.

With the scores level 2-2 after three rounds of penalties, he stepped up to bend his stylish penalty kick past Rui Patricio to give Spain an advantage that Portugal were never able to match.

“I’m pleased with the performance. The most important thing is the reward for us, which is to get to the final. Whatever happens in the final I am proud to have contributed to the success of the team and the supporters must be proud of us,” Ramos was quoted on UEFA’s official website.

He added: “I wanted to take a penalty, especially after the bad experience in the Champions League semifinal with Real Madrid.”

Jordi Alba, the national teammate of Ramos, went as far as saying that the curled spot-kick served as a shut-up call for those who have continued to mock the player for his disappointing penalty from two months ago.

“[Sergio Ramos] got a lot of stick after missing against Bayern but he showed a lot of cool and he shut a few people up. He took a really good penalty and he’s delighted like the rest of us,” the Valencia left-back asserted.

I’m sorry, explain how this has any relation to Charlie Adam other than the fact they both missed penalties.

This is a whole new level of ‘sh**e’.
