Fulham midfielder Clint Dempsey has hinted that he may join Cottagers teammate Moussa Dembele in a potential transfer to Arsenal this summer.
Dempsey, 29, was the stand-out performer for Martin Jol’s men last season, propelling them to a ninth-place finish in the Premier League.
In addition to impressing everyone at Fulham, Dempsey ensured that his external suitors also take a close look at his ability to shine at the highest level.
The United States international scored in one of Fulham’s two wins against Liverpool, whose American owners have consistently shown interest in signing him.
He also played a crucial role in helping Fulham claim four of the six maximum points against Arsenal, who finished with the best record in London.
The Reds and the Gunners continue to be touted as Dempsey’s greatest admirers but with the Anfield outfit missing out on Champions League qualification yet again, Dempsey is poised to complete his European dream by attempting a move to the side that ended in third place this season.
“I want to do as much as I can in my career and look back and say I made the most of all the opportunities I’ve had. I’m always going to want to play in Champions League,” Dempsey asserted, making it clear that his pursuit of playing in Europe’s most elite club competition will remain perpetual until achieved.
He added: “It’s something I’ve never done. I’d like to test myself at that level. That way I can look back and say, ‘Hey, I gave it a go. Either I was good enough or I wasn’t good enough.’
“If I wanted to be comfortable, no offence to MLS, but I would’ve stayed in MLS, because I would have been closer to my family and friends, and I would have been used to the way of life. I’m a risk-taker. I want to throw myself in the deep end and see if I can swim.”
Meanwhile, Dempsey has assured Fulham fans that if he cannot complete a move away from the club in the near future, he will continue to be committed to their cause after all that the Cottagers have done for him.
“They’ve (Fulham) offered a contract, and I just wanted to focus on my football and finish off the season strongly. I’ve always said I’m grateful for everything Fulham has done for me.
“Some of the best memories I have in soccer have been there. But the fact remains that I want to play in Champions League. I want to play at the highest level possible,” he concluded.
