Cisse heroics keep Magpies rolling

Swansea City 0-2 Newcastle United

By | 6th April 2012

Papiss Demba Cisse scored a goal either side of the interval to propel Newcastle to an impressive 2-0 win over Swansea City at Liberty Stadium.

The Magpies arrived in Wales for this evening’s tricky Good Friday fixture tied on points with Chelsea and five points adrift of fourth-place Tottenham Hotspur and third-place Arsenal.

Defeating the Swans lifted them three points clear of the Blues and brought them within two points of the Spurs and the Gunners.

Both the North London outfits face tricky outings this weekend, as Tottenham visit Sunderland in tomorrow’s early kick-off and Arsenal welcome Manchester City in a match that City boss Roberto Mancini considers pivotal in the title race.

Arsenal’s 2-1 defeat to QPR last weekend, coupled with the Spurs’ 3-1 triumph over the Swans, brought the two cross-town rivals level and despite a terrific seven-game winning streak preceding their Loftus Road debacle, Arsene Wenger’s men suddenly find themselves in familiar territory.

Any further slip-ups from them will give Spurs the opportunity to once again leap-frog them in the standings and more importantly, a failure to finish the season strong will only validate their reputation as a team that lacks composure in big moments.

Newcastle certainly won’t mind their rivals slipping up, particularly now that they are within two points of a top-four spot that can spring a massive surprise to their vocal critics and seal Champions League qualification for next season.

To their credit, the Toon players are thriving at all they can control. Cisse has now scored nine goals in eight Premier League outings, with seven of those goals coming over the course of the club’s last four consecutive wins.
