Mancini: No rift with midfielder

Manager denies Barry clash

By | 12th March 2012

Manchester City manager Roberto Mancini has revealed midfielder Gareth Barry’s substitution near the end of the first half of yesterday’s 1-0 defeat at Swansea was down to injury concerns, not performance.

Barry was replaced by Sergio Aguero as City admitted to break what was then a goalless deadlock. The England international responded furiously to the substitution but Mancini believes that given the circumstances, the incident does not need to be exaggerated.

“Gareth has had a problem for three weeks, I don’t know where. It is a small injury. They had a lot of possession in the opening 30 minutes and we needed another striker to press high, not because Barry played badly,” Mancini explained in his post-match press conference at Liberty Stadium.

The manager added: “This is normal (for Barry to be unhappy). (But) I decide this. I’m the manager.”

Barry’s touchline rant was not the only heated incident on a frustrating afternoon for City in Wales. Troubled striker Mario Balotelli reportedly clashed with Yaya Toure in the tunnel at half-time but Mancini denied being aware of the bust-up.

“I don’t know,” insisted the City boss as he focuses on preparing his team for Thursday night’s second leg Europa League clash with Sporting Lisbon, who lead 1-0 from the first leg.

In his press conference, Mancini also insisted that despite being one point behind defending champions Manchester United, City remain confident about their own prospects of winning the Premier League title.

Next week will provide a major test to those claims as City entertain Chelsea at Etihad Stadium.

Why does Barry suddenly think he is a top player that demands respect. At Villa he was much more humble. I guess money changes people. Mancini is crap and so is Barry. For England sake we need Wilshere the side to banish Barry to the bench where he belongs. I hope Walker at spuds can banish that big c*** at right back at city. HES TOO BLONX FOR RB. Capello was correct.
