Rising star slams United’s focus

Shaqiri questions United's CL commitment

By | 23rd February 2012

FC Basel winger Xherdan Shaqiri has criticized Manchester United for lacking focus in their two matches with the Swiss side during the UEFA Champions League group stage, suggesting that the English champions’ arrogance warranted an exit from the Europe’s most elite club competition.

The Red Devils were sent packing after they followed up a 3-3 draw at home to Shaqiri’s Basel with a 2-1 defeat at St. Jakob Park.

All United needed on the final match day in Basel was a draw but Shaqiri, who drew interest from the Old Trafford outfit in January before agreeing to sign for Bayern Munich in the summer, has revealed that their players’ attitude was not even professional.

“United underestimated us. You could feel it in the tunnel and even in the warm-up. They weren’t fully focused and I’m not sure a United player made one sprint,” Shaqiri asserted after helping his current teammates overcome future club Bayern in the Round of 16 first leg on Wednesday evening.

Noting that United players refused to congratulate their shocking conquerors upon elimination in December, the 20-year old added: “Afterwards, you couldn’t even swap shirts – they were gone that quickly.”

Nevertheless, United boss Sir Alex Ferguson has taken such criticism in his stride, promising supporters at Old Trafford that they will not see any signs of complacency when Ajax take the field in Manchester tonight for the second leg of a Europa League tie that the Premier League outfit leads 2-0.

“You know the experience we had against Basel. We were 2-0 up at half-time and it stays in the memory bank, so I don’t think we’ll be casual or careless about what we’re going to achieve here,” the Scot explained.

Following their Europa League commitments, United will immediately begin preparations for this weekend’s league fixture against Norwich City.
