After spending a year in Germany playing for FC Ingolstadt of the German 2. Bundesliga, United States striker Edson Buddle is returning to the Galaxy after signing a free transfer.
The Galaxy garnered suspicion early Wednesday when they posted a picture of a blank #14 jersey on their official Twitter account, asking fans whose name they would like to see on the jersey.
Shortly after, the news became official that Buddle would be re-joining his former teammates in Los Angeles.
The American scored a career-high 17 goals for LA in 2010 and represented his country at the World Cup in South Africa the same year.
He joined FC Ingolstadt in January 2011 and enjoyed moderate success for the club, scoring ten goals during his time in Germany.
Buddle joins Irishman Robbie Keane to create one of the most imposing striking tandems in the league. Both players will look to be on the receiving end of many great services from playmakers Landon Donovan and David Beckham.
“I am thrilled to be able to return to MLS and a club that meant so much to me in my career,” said Buddle in an official statement on the Galaxy website.
He added: “When I left for Germany last winter, I said I hoped to be able to one day return to the Galaxy and help lead the club to an MLS Cup championship. That day is today and I look forward to the challenges that now lie ahead.”
After returning Beckham earlier in the offseason and now adding Buddle to a club that hoisted the MLS Cup this past season, all members of the organization are excited to begin their title defense .
“We’re really excited to have Edson re-joining the LA Galaxy,” said Head Coach Bruce Arena in a team press release. “He has been an outstanding player for us in the past and we look forward to him continuing that success for many years to come.”
Buddle, Beckham and the rest of the Galaxy will kick off their season March 10th against Real Salt Lake.
