Spurs and Toffees win Cup battles

By | 27th January 2012

A brilliant Rafael Van der Vaart strike guided Tottenham Hotspur to a 1-0 win at Watford while Marouane Fellaini’s decisive second-half goal saw off Fulham in Friday’s all-Premier League FA Cup Fourth Round clash at Goodison Park.

Van der Vaart struck right before half-time from 30-yards out to stun Vicarage Road and give the Spurs a slender advantage that the hosts were not able to overturn.

There was clearly more drama involved in Merseyside, where the Cottagers took the lead through an early Danny Murphy penalty in the 14th minute.

The Toffees responded 13 minutes later though, as Argentine forward Denis Stracqualursi scored his first goal for the club since moving on loan from Tigre in August last year.

Marouane Fellaini then completed the comeback for the home side when he struck 30 minutes after the interval to secure a 2-1 lead that Fulham would not be able to come back from.

Bobby Zamora, Steve Sidwell, and Marcello Trotta all came off the bench to boost Martin Jol’s attacking options but Everton held on for a much-needed win in front of their supporters.

Tomorrow’s list of FA Cup fixtures is headlined by the West London derby between QPR and Chelsea, which will be followed shortly by Manchester United’s visit to Anfield to square off against Carling Cup finalists Liverpool.

On Sunday, a struggling Arsenal side will square off against a tricky opposition in Aston Villa.
