Fulham midfielder Clint Dempsey has made it clear that he would like his long-term future to be at a club with Champions League aspirations, alerting many potential suitors to make a move for the U.S. international.
Dempsey has scored nine goals in 22 matches so far this season, with his most recent accomplishment being a remarkable hat-trick – the first for an American in the Premier League – against Newcastle United.
His form has guided the Cottagers into the midtable despite a slow start but ahead of tonight’s FA Cup clash with Everton, the 28-year old has indicated that he may not stay with the West London outfit for much longer.
“You should never get content. I want to play in the Champions League. Nobody thought I would get this far. I want to go as far as I can,” Dempsey confidently explained in an interview with The Times.
Indeed, not many expected Dempsey – always a bright talent – to make such a strong impact in the English top flight when he completed a protracted £2 million transfer from the New England Revolution.
He has since enjoyed a Europa League final with Fulham in 2010 while also becoming the leading American scorer in the Premier League with 42 in 169 appearances.
Former U.S. international striker Brian McBride, who also represented Fulham, was full of praise for Dempsey when he found out that the record he formerly held had been broken.
“When I saw him do that, I was so happy for him. It may sound crazy, but I’m not a records kind of person, and at first I didn’t even know there was a record,” McBride started off.
The 39-year old added: “But when I saw that it was making some news, then I realized that it was a great feat for him in the sense that you can see how his career has progressed and evolved. It’s a great legacy.”
McBride also weighed in on the Fulham-Everton fixture, explaining that he will be reluctantly supporting the Cottagers since a memorable eight-game spell with Toffees warrants some support as well.
“I’ll always have a spot for Everton, but I’m rooting for Fulham. It’s pretty funny because I have some good friends at Everton, but my allegiance is with Fulham.
“I look at my time in Everton fondly, but having spent more time at Fulham and having the chance to really get into the workings that aren’t just the soccer side of things, that is where my allegiance lies,” he concluded.
As far as Dempsey’s long-term allegiance is concerned, that definitely remains undecided.
