City midfielder hits out at Reds fans

Barry: I could have been a Liverpool player

By | 25th January 2012

Gareth Barry has acknowledged that Liverpool fans remain among the most influential supporters in English football but the Manchester City playmaker has also criticized them for verbally abusing him a few years ago.

Barry was touted as a replacement for Xabi Alonso and while the England international was even on the verge of signing for Rafa Benitez, he moved away from the protracted transfer proposition due to the impatience of Reds faithful.

“I remember when the transfer saga was going on, I was watching a Liverpool friendly [against Lazio at Anfield] and the home fans were singing, ‘You can stick your Gareth Barry up your arse’. I was at home, but I could just hear it vaguely,” Barry told reporters ahead of tonight’s Carling Cup second-leg.

The midfielder added: “That might have got into my head a little bit. Liverpool were still interested when I decided to join City [in 2009].

“I thought about it really hard, but the things the club were talking about, I felt City were on the up, whereas Liverpool were maybe finding it a bit tougher than City.”

Despite his confidence in the ability of the league-leading Citizens to enjoy future success, in general, and also specifically overturn a 1-0 first-leg deficit against Liverpool from the first leg, Barry is aware that doing so at Merseyside is an uphill task and the Reds could, indeed, end up with the last laugh.

“It’s obviously going to be a really tough task because at home, Liverpool are a great team with their support behind them. But this time with us being a goal behind and playing away from home, we can go there and play good football and maybe the pressure will be on them a little bit more,” he concluded.

The reason for the long protracted deal that fell through was he was waiting for a club with a bigger paycheck…can’t blame him for that but don’t put the blame elsewhere. I know he won’t tell the real reason. Better still he should have kept his mouth shut
