American sinks the Reds again

Fulham 1-0 Liverpool

By | 5th December 2011

Clint Dempsey punished an error from Liverpool goalkeeper Pepe Reina to score five minutes from full-time and guide Fulham to a famous 1-0 win at Craven Cottage.

The result was reminiscent of the Cottagers’ 1-0 win over the Reds in May 2007, when Dempsey scored his first goal for the club to secure their top flight status.

The win may not be as significant tonight as it was back then, but the West Londoners can certainly use the three points to show that the talent within their squad is worthy of more success than they have had thus far in the campaign.

However, the three points were arguably even more important for a Liverpool side that was trailing fourth-place Chelsea by five points and desperately needed a result to stay in touch with the Champions League qualification spots.

After a lively first half, it even appeared that they were in the driving seat but a controversial straight red card shown to Jay Spearing for a late challenge on Moussa Dembele brought Kenny Dalglish’s side down to 10 men.

Still, Stewart Downing had a cracker of a chance moments later, only to be denied by the finger tips of Mark Schwarzer as well as the post.

The momentum then suddenly shifted towards Fulham, who were unlucky not to have led when Dempsey’s shot beat Reina only to hit the cross-bar.

In the 85th minute, though, the hosts would finally take the lead when Danny Murphy tested Reina with a shot from distance.

The Spaniard could not gather Murphy’s attempt, leaking it right into the path of Dempsey, who made no mistake in converting from point blank range.

The result moves Fulham into 13th place with 15 points, five clear of the relegation zone while the Reds are now 15 points behind league leaders Manchester City and 10 adrift of defending champions Manchester United.

What a stunner…Carroll didn’t score! Still waitng for the flood of goals from the 35,000,000 pound sensation.
Yet another schoolboy error from Reina, the most overrated ‘keeper we’ve ever had. Reina means queen in Spanish – he plays like one.
