Inter Milan captain Javier Zanetti is relishing the prospect of linking up with Argentine compatriot Carlos Tevez in January as speculation rises over the future of the unsettled Manchester City forward.
Tevez enjoyed a remarkable run at Eastlands, leading City to FA Cup glory in a season where many considered him to be the club’s best player.
However, the summer signing of Sergio Aguero from Atletico Madrid led to manager Roberto Mancini often benching Tevez in the early weeks of the season and it all blew up in the infamous ‘warm-up’ incident at Bayern Munich’s Allianz Arena in September.
The player’s consequent suspension and exclusion from City’s squad has prompted him to return to Argentina without any clarity over his future and Zanetti believes that the time is right for his struggling side to bid for the player they desperately wanted to sign in the summer.
“In January, some big players will come. The club is working towards January, and they have always offered support when we needed it. He (Tevez) is having problems with his club, but he is a great player,” Zanetti said when asked about the Nerazzuri‘s ambitions in recovering from a terrible start to the season.
Claudio Ranieri’s men are fourth from bottom in the Italian Serie A and have also been linked with City’s Mario Balotelli but Zanetti is convinced that Tevez offers the established presence needed to overcome many current difficulties, particularly the possible departure of Diego Milito to Paris St. Germain.
“Certainly, he is a star, he could substitute Milito” Zanetti confidently told Gazzetta dello Sport.
Zanetti’s Inter teammate Walter Samuel recently urged his teammates to fight on, insisting that putting together a winning streak can help them go as far as contending for the Scudetto.
Although Tevez may not be the most inspirational man in the dressing room, his heroics at West Ham and City prove that he is the right man to save the season for a struggling outfit.
