Influential Everton center back Phil Jagielka has praised teammate Leighton Baines, telling the club’s official website that the left back has been the club’s “best player” in recent years.

Despite a convincing defeat at the hands of Chelsea on Saturday, Baines will welcome the comments as Fabio Capello begins to contemplate his squad for next summer’s European Championships. Baines is currently second choice behind Chelsea’s Ashley Cole, but if he continues his excellent form he’ll give the Italian something to think about.

“He has been our best player for two years now,” Jagielka told Everton’s official website. “He probably does not realize it as he is very down to earth and doesn’t listen to the hype but he is a quality player and certainly doesn’t look out of place in an England shirt.”

Jags deserves a spot, too

Baines also had kind words for his Toffees teammate, and is hoping that they can travel to Euro 2012 together at the end of the Premier League campaign.

“There is a lot of competition at centre-half,” Baines said. “Rio Ferdinand was not even in the squad (to face Montenegro) and there were a few good players who did not even make the bench. The two United players – Smalling and Jones – have emerged as contenders for those positions.

“But Jags has been playing well for a few seasons now and the manager knows him and knows what he is about. He is always in and around the squad, he is always on the bench and has played quite a few games now.

“He will be hoping to do the same as the rest of us and keep his form up between now and the end of the season and if he can get a few minutes on the pitch for England then that will help as well.”

Can Everton recover from their disappointing defeat and march up the table? Where will the Toffees end up this season? Have your say below!

they have to improve zero points from 3 games, we will be lucky to pick up any points from our next two games, i am sick to death of moyes tactics and his formation, we cannot continue with one striker and hope for an early goal and defend for the next 85 minutes, we want a 4-4-2 formation and a change in midfield, osman is no arteta so stop trying to convince yourself that he is, why sign two players to bring them on when we are 2 or 3 goals down, once again we will be in a relegation fight and praying no star players want out in the january window.
