Tottenham Hotspur’s day went from bad to worse as yet another injury to Ledley King at the half-hour mark was followed by the Spurs conceding their lead to hosts Newcastle United on two different occasions.

King’s first-half withdrawal did not appear to impact the visitors right away at St. James’ Park, with Harry Redknapp’s men instead going ahead through Rafael Van der Vaart’s penalty.

Steven Taylor had fouled Emmanuel Adebayor in the box, which set-up Van der Vaart for a sublime spot-kick past his Dutch compatriot Tim Krul.

However, a fantastic build-up in the opening minutes of the second half led to Demba Ba slotting home from close range.

Brad Friedel had collected the ball in the Spurs goal but slid over the line, which effectively confirmed that the Magpies had equalized.

With the score tied at 1-1, the game was evenly poised before Jermain Defoe’s brilliant turn-around finish gave Krul no option but to watch as a spectator when the Spurs celebrated a 2-1 lead at Tyneside with a little over 22 minutes to go.

That did not stop a rocking St. James’ Park from getting behind their team to push for the unbeaten record to remain in tact.

With less than five minutes to go, their faith was justly rewarded when Shola Ameobi clinically placed the ball into the back of the net to punish the shaky Spurs.

A 2-2 draw was the least Newcastle deserved for their perseverance throughout the match and they could have had another penalty late in the game if Jake Livermore’s apparent handball resulted in a spot-kick.

Nevertheless, the result keeps Alan Pardew’s Magpies in the top four and yet again highlights their determination to return to European football.
