The New York Red Bulls defeated the Los Angeles Galaxy 2-0 to claim their third win in five matches and take a massive step towards the MLS playoffs.

League-leading Galaxy traveled to the Red Bulls Arena without the services of playmaker Landon Donovan for tonight’s crucial match and their lack of creativity without the U.S. international was felt throughout.

The hosts were playing under significantly more pressure as they desperately needed a win to continue their recovery following a shaky summer.

Striker Luke Rogers, whose absence impacted the Red Bulls’ performances in the summer months, opened the scoring right after the half-hour mark before former Arsenal talisman Thierry Henry added a second at the hour mark to provide New York with an important cushion.

The Red Bulls now have 43 points from 32 fixtures, which means they are tied with fourth-placed Houston Dynamo as the post-season approaches.

League-leading Galaxy, meanwhile, remain 21 points ahead with their massive total of 64 points and will seek a better response from their fatigued roster in the derby clash with Chivas USA on October 16.

The Red Bulls, who are finally gaining some momentum thanks to the impact of Englishman Rogers, Frenchman Henry, and the midfield trio of Joel Lindpere, Jan Gunnar Solli, and Teemu Tainu, will next square off against Eastern Conference Leaders Sporting Kansas on October 15.
