Carlo Ancelotti has revealed his great admiration for Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson, describing the Scot as a brilliant leader who knows how to delegate responsibility and develop those around him.
Ancelotti, who was replaced by Andre Villas-Boas last summer following a trophyless season in-charge of Chelsea, insists that he is enjoying life away from football but relishes the prospect of managing in the same league as Fergie.
The Italian recently explained that political influences, slower tempo, and disrespectful crowds are marring the quality of other European leagues such as the Italian Serie A while the Barclays Premier League continues to flourish as the best league in the world away from all such distractions.
While he admits that taking charge of another competitive English club such as Liverpool or Tottenham will be an opportunity that he won’t be able to turn down, for now the former AC Milan manager is simply focused on watching Sir Alex to maximize his learning.
“The more time goes by, the more I fall in love with Ferguson. He is unusual as a coach. It’s not his direct training – he delegates a lot and has an excellent team around him,” Ancelotti told La Repubblica.
Praising Fergie for the manner in which he developed the likes of Park Ji-Sung, Ashley Young, and Tom Cleverley within a short period of time, Ancelotti added: “He understands football like few others. Under his management, all players improve – most recently Young. He can take a little-known Korean and make him an important part of the Manchester United team.
“He’s not afraid to field young players. Cleverley is one to watch – he’s a 22-year-old midfielder and looks very strong.”
Last, but not least, Ancelotti also paid a tribute to the humility of Ferguson, who has led United to 12 Premier League titles, five FA Cup triumphs, and two UEFA Champions League trophies without ever resting on his laurels.
“United play a European game – a little bit English, very modern. Finally, and a very important aspect for me, Ferguson is very good, very humble, as a person,” Ancelotti concluded.
Following the international break, United will face bitter rivals Liverpool in a highly anticipated early kick-off at Anfield.
